Architecture
Architecture is the fine art that is devoted to the design and construction of actual buildings. In contrast from many of the other types of fine art, architecture has a dual purpose of aesthetic appearance and of functionality. The job of the architect is to create a building that will be effective for human use while at the same time being visually pleasing from the exterior perspective. This task can be quite difficult because of all of the considerations that need to be taken into account. To complete this objective, an architect must go through several years of educational and professional training to learn the fundamental theories that guide the principles of design and construction.
Architecture in its most basic form has been around ever since humans began to build structures to provide shelter. This was largely related to the needs of the people and the early forms stressed the functionality as a prime concern rather than the aesthetic appearance. As generations learned the most effective building practices, more freedom was gained to play with the appearance of these structures and the art of architecture began to emerge. Some of the first large structures that were thought to be largely artistic rather than functional were the Great Pyramids that were built in Egypt.
The world of architecture has gone through many shifts in style and form. New building techniques have led to more structurally sound buildings and opened the door for more artistic freedom to be used in the development of a pleasing appearance. Architects like Frank Lloyd Wright in the United States were among the first to tie the appearance of a building to its natural surroundings and take design cues from the environment in the vision of the entire plan. Many modern architects have built upon this foundation, creating whimsical and fantastic buildings that remain completely functional and serve as monuments to the art of architecture.
