Sculpture Art

Considered to be one of the original fine arts, sculpture has been in existence as long as humans have been capable of creating art. Technically, the idea of sculpture is the creation of a piece of art in three dimensions. This is done using materials that can be shaped, either by adding or removing parts of the material. There are several types of sculptures that a person can make, including free standing models, relief sculptures, and statues. In modern times, more abstract forms of sculpture have been included in the description of the art form, such as sound sculpture and light sculpture.

One of the most common forms of sculpture is found with statues. These can be both small or large and are most often used to represent an entity, such as an event, animal, person, or object. In older times, sculpture was one of the most frequently used methods of celebrating the particular characteristics or conquests of a single person. In fact, many examples can be found from locations around the world where a statue was made to resemble a great person. There are even some, such as the Statue of Zeus at Olympia that were considered to be one of the world’s greatest wonders.

In the modernist age of sculpture, most of the works began to take on a more abstract manifestation. In these works, the sculpture no longer represented an actual person or event, but could take on the meaning of a simple idea. An example of one of the more popular sculptors whose works exemplified this concept was the Romanian Constantin Brancusi. His Infinite Column and other large sculptures were considered to be masterpieces and many have followed his unique style. Sculpture is often a reflection of the current age and many newer sculptures are using technology in the form of electronics to create a striking appearance.
